Official FINAL FANTASY XI Forum Launches!

Не успел появится новый форум, как на нем можно уже выцарапать кучу новых изменений которые произойдут уже в марте, а именно если я правильно понял 16 числа.
Итак. что же будет меняться:
- Увеличение количества слотов в рюкзаке. (Надеюсь до 100)

Мой новый блог который я начал приводить в порядок. Пока обычный стандартный стиль после того как я распишу все что было на бете я примусь за оформление журнала. Так как теперь все новости практически я буду писать по 14 части, то данный блок потихонечку начнет затухать, но будет открыт, вдруг да что будет по 11 части мало ли :)

Я думаю в скором времени бета будет 24/7 и тогда можно будет исследовать мир Эорзеи лучше.

Итак вчера прошел бета тест, вторая волна. Общее время 18 часов с 6 утра 24 июля до 2 утра 25 июля.
Статью буду делить на несколько кусков.
Сама статья будет расположена в моем другом блоге он пустой. Просто там удобно будет делать ссылки, здесь же все спутается с 11 частью.
Чуть позже когда подготовлю первую часть напишу где что.

Завтра к вечеру я подготовлю большую статью со всем что сегодня произошло во время игры и что я узнал ну и опишу вообще про все поподробней потому что вопросов на самом деле очень много возникало люди помогали покачался даже с американцами в партии сделал кучу скринов...комп слава богу держит без проблем что меня приятно удивило..проблема лишь конечно же в лагах и в ужасных 2-3 секундных задержках.

Как работают квесты в FF14

Посмотрим это видео..и разложим его по полочкам.

1) Ранк и сила.

Одно из первых что сразу бросается в глаза это "Ранг игрока" и "Физический уровень" (Rank/Physical level). Физический уровень дает нам статы. Повышения ранuа дает нам скиллы и умения. Экипировка имеет лимит по уровню ранга.

2) Секреты камня.

Рассмотрим выпадающее меню у камня. Первые две опции говорят сами за себя, первая закрыть меня вторая получить какой либо квест. Используя 'guardian favor' во время квеста вы получаете бафф. Такой же бафф вы могли получить у стражников в Ургане или же в прошлом. "View faction standings" должно быть тоже понятно для те кто играл в FFXI, данная функция показывает каково положение всех фракций в мире. Последняя позиция это небольшой FAQ для игрока который объясняет например, что огонь может растопить лег, но при этом лед сильнее ветра т.д. То есть разъясняет позиции всех элементов по отношению к друг другу и так же разъясняет статы игрока

3) Возьми квест, любой квест.

Итак мы решили взять квест. В список входят квесты только данной ареи. То есть попав в другую зону у камня там будут другие квесты. Выбираем и идем его выполнять. Переводчики подошли с юмором к названиям квестов, так некоторые названия имеют отношения к ретро играм, песням, классическим поэмам и мультфильмам.

Сразу же появляется следующее окошко.

Окно показывает полностью детали квеста. Сколько гилей вы получите в случае успешного завершения задания, что именно надо сделать в адннном случае зарубить 5 летучих мышей, кто дал квест, какой класс рекомендуется для того чтобы успешно выполнить задание, где именно нужно выполнять квест и сколько дается на это времени.

Вся информация расписана просто и понятно. После согласия появляется еще одно окно и вот именно здесь и заключается вся соль того чего придумала SE.

Вы указываете каким количеством вы собираетесь выполнять ваше задание. Разница варьируется от 1 до 15 человек.
Соло - 1 человек (Сложность: ☆)
Банда - 2-4 человека (Сложность: ☆☆)
Партия - 5-6 человек (Сложность: ☆☆☆)
Отряд - 6-11 человек (Сложность: ☆☆☆☆)
Легион - 12-15 человек (Сложность: ☆☆☆☆☆)
Понятно что чем выше сложность тем больше мы получим в награду. Так же за выполнение данного квеста соло вы получите еще 200 Guardian points (GP)

Которые как я писал раньше можно потратить на бафф. Возможно чем выше сложность тем больше GP вы получите или еще лучше какие нибудь предметы.

4) Это корабль!

Если есть корабли значит и есть что-то наподобие Джуно... торгового города который будет соединять между собой все столицы в единую транспортную воздушную сеть. Интересно как выглядит Сид :)

5) Отмеченные моснтры.

Допустим вы не стали заморачиваться над тем чтобы внимательно изучить задание и если сопартийцы решили узнать у вас кого же мы должны убивать вы будете носком ковырять землю и бубнить что-то под нос.. не отчаивайтесь! Вам не надо теперь бегать часами по всему миру выискивая где же обитает данная тварь - каждый камень дает квесты только своего района и конечно цель квеста тоже находиться в данном регионе и плюс! Она помечена знаком, мало ли вдруг вы начнете крошить все что движется в капусту не разбирая где свои где чужие. Эволюция "на лицо"

6) Я получил скиллы.

Как я писал раньше про уровень ранга и физический уровень, так вот для того чтобы получать скиллы для их повышения вы должны убивать монстров. Ну вобщем это понятно стандартная ММОРПГ. Качаешься качаешься и еще раз качаешься.

После успешного выполнения задания появляется окно.
Где расписано что вы получили за задание.

Появляется телепорт который вас телепортирует к камню.

Tanaka & Komoto Discuss Themes & Goals

Game Entertainment conducted a "Key Person Interview" with key people Hiromichi Tanaka and Nobuaki Komoto. The interview revolved around their goals regarding their newest MMO, and the themes it is based on. They had a lot to say, so let's get right into it.

-- Please tell us the theme of Final Fantasy XIV.

Komoto: For us, it was thinking, "What do Final Fantasy fans like?" The keyword we came up with was "growth." The most important aspects of role-playing are growing your character, getting new weapons, new abilities and opening the door to new stories and adventures. And that's what FFXIV is, a place to grow through meeting new people and attaining new abilities. There is also a brand new story to enjoy... you could say the theme of FFXIV is combining all these key RPG elements for the player.

-- Each title in the Final Fantasy series has its own unique world and special charm. What is unique about FFXIV?

Komoto: The world of FFXIV isn't just a straight fantasy world, but as you can see in the opening movie, incorporates some technological aspects as well. It still has that medieval feel, and it's designed to be a world where the characters and their adventures feel natural.

The two main points we built around were daily living and adventuring and giving the player the ability to enjoy either one. As for the story, our Scenario Writer experimented with many things not usually seen in online games. For example, there are a couple little riddles and some foreshadowing hidden in the opening movie if you take a close look. We would like to see players working together to progress the story so they don't spoil it by accident in coversation. There are many facets to the game world and secrets hidden in every nook and cranny.

-- You've prepared a number of races this time around, but do you see people flocking to any one in particular?

Komoto: The Lalafell, which are like TaruTaru from FFXI, seems to be pretty popular with everyone. We went through a little trial-and-error trying to get the height just right, and I think we settled on something good. (laughs)

Tanaka: We also have new tribes like Highlander and the Galka, now Roegadyn, are a much more "macho man" type of race. I like them a lot.

-- FFXI has been running 8 years now, which is a long time for an MMO. Are opnions and requests from FFXI going to be reflected in FFXIV?

Komoto: Thiking in terms of the version updates, we've always been listening and responding to the opnions of FFXI users. However, there are some specific requests or hardware-related issues that sometimes we just can't respond to. With FFXIV, we can address a lot more since we have been taking in feedback all through the beta process. We want to continue this rapport with the players up until the official release and beyond.

-- The basis of any RPG is the encounters, so what are the highlights of FFXIV battle system?

Komoto: During the Alpha, we got some criticism that battles had bad pacing, so now we've made it feel a little more like an action game. This doesn't mean you need to be good at action games to play, but rather the learning curve is much softer and once you get together with a party, the pace really picks up and everyone's roles start to come together. There's also a lot of freedom to it. If you want to fight a certain way, you can learn different abilities and set up a character that matches your particular style.

Tanaka: In FFXI, you have Auto-Battle and can chat freely, but this time we threw out that option and went with a system that focuses on pace and strategy. There are pros and cons to this type of system, but we think the majority of users are satisfied so far.

-- What stands out about the encounters in FFXIV?

Komoto: We want players to focus on how they engage a monster. In FFXI, you would just kill one after the other, but now there are party vs. party battles which demand players focus on tactics and strategy. This is just something I found funny, but there are monsters that will stare in your direction. So, you might think "What are you lookin' at?" and smack them only to find out they're ridiculously strong. (laughs) Even in regular battles you will find yourself in wrapped up in all sorts of situations. I think that's something people will really enjoy.

-- Are you aiming for a wider age range or looking to appeal better to both male and female players?

Tanaka: There are many players who don't have a lot of time, and we want to hear their opinions on how to make the game enjoyable. We want to build something where players won't be left behind by their friends if they can't play as much.

-- Is that what you're aiming for with the Guildleve system?

Komoto: The first objective of Guildleve is to make FFXIV accessible to new players -- anyone can jump right in and enjoy a solo adventure. The difiiculty is selectable and there are no requirements stopping low-level players. Players can even invite others to come along, and it's a great way to meet new adventurers.

Also, with most MMOs, once you start grinding experience points, it can be difficult to stop. Guildleves give you clear end points and help you manage your time better. This makes it especially easy for light users to budget time to play. Also, people can get drawn into difficult quests or ones with great rewards. The goal is to let people clearly plan out what they want to do each day.

-- What system have you prepared in terms of communication online?

Komoto: There are many dicussions going on about Guildleve, and there is one suggestion that people be able to enter an instanced area where they are invisible to other players and cannot be bothered by them. However, having many people playing together in the same world is an important part of the game, so we decided to keep everyone interacting in the same field areas. Still, we are thinking of ways to keep users from griefing each other.

If players are at a checkpoint after completing their Guildleve, we would like them to be able to wave a greeting to an incoming party and maintain that multiplayer atmosphere. We feel that it is very important to preserve that warm feeling of sharing a game world with many other players. We also want to devise tools, akin to the Linkshell, which allow players to communicate during Guildleve and form parties with ease.

Tanaka: For FFXIV, we also have ways to communicate outside the game. With the Player Site, users can stay in contact with each other even when not in-game.

-- It seems like there are opportunities to just sit back and chat then.

Tanaka: Yes, that's right.

Komoto: We've also increased the ability to express oneself through the wide range of emotes.

-- Through all the new experiences the Final Fantasy series gives us, there is always that certain "something" that is common to them all. What is new to FFXIV, and how does it retain that Final Fantasy feel?

Komoto: As I mentioned earlier, that Final Fantasy "feel" is about growing and uncovering a new story. That is what we want users to enjoy the most. For FFXI, being an online game was enough to make it new, but this time we're focusing on Guildleves to allow players with less time to fully enjoy the game and community sites to promote communication. This will be a Final Fantasy that adapts to the lifestyle of its players.

Tanaka: I'm always asked "what makes a Final Fantasy?" but even we don't have a definitive answer. However, there is a unique flavor that permeates each title -- it's just hard to put into words. It could be the colors, the atmosphere or the elemental system. Also, there is Aetheryte, which exists as the Crystal of this title.

-- In FFXI, expansions and other additional content kept the game evolving. What kind of plan do you have regarding the life of FFXIV?

Komoto: As far as a plan, we have the next two years mapped out, and a ton of ideas stored up beyond that. We have more and more things we want to try, but we have to also have to examine how users play the game. The ideal would be to combine our ideas with what the users want and deliver something good for everyone.

-- Unlike FFXI, now you are hearing opinions from mostly beginners.

Komoto: Those kinds of opinions are very important to us. Before we would only get demands from heavy users, but with FFXIV, there are many more light users, and we want to hear their concerns directly. Since we're already pretty knowledgable about online games, it's important to have some back and forth with those who aren't.

Tanaka: In FFXI, when I have the time, I like to go in-game as a player and check out what people are saying. (laughs)

-- Lastly, do you have a message for those people thinking of purchasing the game?

Komoto: People looking to have fun with the game just need to take a spin through the character creator. Final Fantasy is associated with having a preset character that you take through a story. With FFXIV, you can freely make any kind of character you wish, and this should help even beginners ease themselves into the game world. In addition, you can make a wide variety of characters and start them out in different places, experiencing the story in different ways. We've also included many tutorials to give beginners peace of mind and allow them to enjoy the game and its story.

Tanaka: There are many people who play an MMORPG for the first time and are a little shy and guarded. I say take that first step and try talking to people. An online RPG is different from the standard RPG in that it's a place to meet new people and make new friends. I think that's an amazing experience, and I know if you summon the courage to reach out to others, a wonderful new world will open up before you.

Idols in Eorzea - A Beta Play Report

Two perky idols from Morning Musume, Ai Takahashi and Linlin, stopped by the Square Enix offices to try out something new -- an online game! Producer Hiromichi Tanaka and Director Nobuaki Komoto sat them down in front of Final Fantasy XIV to give it a test run and share their impressions. The interview was recorded in this month's volume of Game Entertainment!

-- So, this is the first time you two have ever tried an online game. What was your first impression?

Takahashi: I always saw Final Fantasy games as having a set name and set appearance for your character. In FFXIV, you get to make the character yourself, and it feels like you get to be the producer in a way. It was really fun.

-- You were really agonizing over all those choices in the character creator.

Takahashi: Yeah. If we didn't have a time limit, I was thinking of going back and choosing a different race.

(Elmer Point: This is because they didn't have all day to play around. There is no time limit on the in-game character creator.)

-- When you get the chance to play again, what kind of character would you want to make?

Takahashi: I like to just get out there and fight, so a swordsman-type character would be good. I probably shouldn't have chosen Archer. (laughs)

-- What were you aiming for this time in terms of character?

Takahashi: I was going for a blonde, perfect-looking character, but then I saw the Lalafell, which are just so cute! Next time I play, I'm going with Lalafell!

-- Linlin, how was your impression?

Linlin: Ever since seeing Final Fantasy over at Ai Takahashi's house, I've always wanted to play one. Now that I've gotten to try out FFXIV, I'm blown away by the amazing graphics. With the rain and falling of leaves, everything just feels so real. I didn't really get the battle system at first, but now that I've learned the ropes, I'll do much better next time. Also, since it's an online game, I really want to jump in and play along with everyone.

-- Linlin, you had a character pre-made for you, but what character would you have liked to make if you had the chance?

Linlin: A character that looked like me but with silver hair would have been nice. People with silver hair have that image of being real strong, you know? (laughs) Also, the Lalafell are cute, so I would like to try out them as well.

-- This time you two were able to play alongside each other, but during actual play, there will probably be many times when you and your characters are apart. If you could choose, what kinds of people would you like to play with?

Linlin: Chinese people! And my buddy Ai, of course!

Takahashi: Yup!

-- Takahashi, what kind of people would you party with?

Takahashi: Americans. I really like English, so it would be awesome to practice my English conversation skills while playing a game.

-- In the actual game, you'll be able to chat with people while you play.

Takahashi: The controls keep you a little busy, but it was fun. I can only use simple English anyway, so if I play with American players, I'll just being throwing out "Yes" and "Hello" over and over. (laughs)

-- Besides chat, there are also a number of emotes you can use.

Takahashi: Yeah, I like how you can dance and such to show how you're feeling.

Tanaka: It hope to see the whole world dancing together.

Takahashi・Linlin: (gasp in awe)

-- Even if their words aren't understood, perhaps people can still make their feelings known. By the way, as you walk through the field areas, how does it feel compared with other Final Fantasy titles?

Takahashi: I have to keep looking at the map and end up running off in some weird direction. It takes a bit to get used to the controls, so I hope to get the hang of it soon.

-- You got to experience a lot of battles in the field, so how was your impression of that?

Takahashi: Battles were fun. I want to fight many more.

-- You'll be able to fight alongside people from around the world too. Battles will get much more exciting.

Takahashi: This time I was just playing alone, and it was lonely, but nice and quiet. Then, I was surprised to see one of the staff just running by! I'm excited by the idea that you'll just randomly meet people throughout the course of play.

-- There are also various conflicts that can pop up as well. For example, people may leave mid-battle.

Takahashi: Ah, yeah, like people just saying "I'm stopping now." There's also the time differences, so people may say, "I'm tired, I'm going to bed."

Linlin: I feel that communicating with people from around the world really works the left-side of your brain and is good for the mind.

-- Another feature of online games is they keep evolving through version updates.

Komoto: You will also be able to experience new parts of the story, such as the movie-like event you saw at the beginning of the game.

Takahashi・Linlin: Really? Wow!

Tanaka: Also, in Final Fantasy XI, you could get married to fellow adventurers your knew in-game.

Takahashi: Really? What a fun place to meet people.

Linlin: They probably have international weddings too...

Komoto: You are able to mask your true self in an online game, so players would never know they were adventuring alongside Takahashi or Linlin.

-- Takahashi and Linlin, do you have any questions for for Tanaka and Komoto? Any things you would like to see in XIV?

Takahashi: Oh! Is it alright?

-- If you ask them now, they might do it for you.

Komoto: We may get to it in about 5... no, maybe 3 years. (laughs)

Linlin: Well, then I want NPCs with my name and Ai's name!

Komoto: Oh, that's alright. I'll sneak them into town somewhere.

Takahashi・Linlin: Wow, really?!

Linlin: You could make it a monster if you want.

Takahashi: Make me a boss monster.

Komoto: It might be doable. I'm not sure, though. (laughs)

-- Any final comments regarding FFXIV?

Takahashi: For me, Final Fantasy is a relaxing experience. The series always surprises me in a positive way, and I can't wait for this one!

Linlin: This was my first time playing a Final Fantasy, and it was a lot of fun. Final Fantasy is very popular in China too, and I bet people will be jealous that I got to do this interview. I hope that people all around the world will be able to enjoy this.

Tanaka・Komoto: We're working on it!

-- I'm not the biggest fan of MMORPGs, so please forgive me if some of my questions are a little strange. Now, I got to play FFXIV earlier, and my first impression was how incredibly beautiful the graphics were. I played FFXI before and it's just worlds apart.

Tanaka: (laughs) What you played was a pre-beta version, but compared with the alpha, the graphics have been given quite a boost. As an online game, we plan to continue improving the look even after service begins.

-- The MMORPG genre is unique in that you raise a player over a period of time, and the game itself has like a "lifespan" wouldn't you say?

Tanaka: Yes, that's true. In fact, amongst the staff, we wondered in FFXI would last beyond 4-5 years in the beginning. However, you have games like Ultima Online and Everquest that started long before FFXI and yet are still operating today. There are titles out there that only last a short while, but we've been very fortunate to have a player base that has supported us to this day.

-- I see, so it's the passion of the players that really drives a game's success. Now, will FFXI users be able to carry over their data into FFXIV?

Tanaka: No, there will be no transferring of data. The games are completely separate, and if you want to enjoy FFXIV, you are joining up for a brand new service. Still, there are some commonalities between the interface and avatars. And of course, we haven't forgotten our dedicated FFXI players and will continue to support FFXI for as long as people keep playing.

-- So, what considerations went into the construction of this new world for FFXIV?

Tanaka: We thought about players transferring from FFXI to FFXIV and decided to make the avatars the same. Users can grow attached to their online persona, so we wanted them to have the same options for avatars should they move over. While their player character may look similar, the adventures that lie before them are completely new. We feel it gives them and their avatar a fresh, exciting experience to look forward to.

-- When it comes to MMORPGs, there are people who say they take up too much time, or that it's difficult to get started as a new player. How will FFXIV combat these opinions and bring in more casual gamers?

Tanaka: (thinks a bit) When we started up FFXI, we built a game aimed at more hardcore gamers. However, 8 years later we have seen an increase in casual, or light users. This is where FFXIV's Guildleve system comes into play. There are mini-quests that can be completed in as little as 30 minutes, and while you participate, you are also skilling up your character. In this way, people can enjoy the game without worrying that it will eat up too much time. Also, this time we have the Armoury System, which allows players to easily change classes at any time (except mid-battle) by changing their equipment. This removes the need for party members to go back and change jobs constantly and is very useful for solo play.

-- Although this is a numbered Final Fantasy, it has a very different style and system. What about FFXIV makes it a Final Fantasy title?

Tanaka: If you're asking me "what is a Final Fantasy?" then that's a question I get quite often. Unfortunately, I don't have a clear answer for that. There are some similarities between the worlds, such as the crystals and the use of elemental magic spells, but for the development team, it's always about creating the best RPG out there. Of course there's some pressure that comes along with aiming so high, so it's good to have people on the team with confidence in their own original ideas. If someone comes to us just looking to create a "Final Fantasy," they probably won't make it past the first interview. (laughs)

-- There are certain icons that are uniquely "Final Fantasy" such as the Chocobo and the Airship.

Tanaka: There was a Chocobo in town during the Alpha. (laughs) It's not used for riding yet, though. We're thinking of using Chocobo in a way that hasn't been done yet in the series. There will be airships, too.

-- Looking at it the other way, what kind of challenges does a Final Fantasy present?

Tanaka: First, just making an MMO is a challenge in itself. Looking back at FFXI, no one really understood what a massive task that was in the beginning. Once we got going, it became a big success and we're recording better sales that any other series title to date.

-- Certainly, online games are a completely different beast and it takes a special know-how to develop them. On that note, will there be any features introduced to keep the player community active?

Tanaka: In FFXI, we had the "Linkshell" which was simply a way to connect a group of users. For FFXIV, we are preparing "Companies" which will make for more tightly-knit groups. We will set it up so members of a Company can communicate in-game or on the Web. We want to have an official site where these players can get together.

-- Compared with when FFXI released, there are now a lot more rival MMORPGs out there. What is going to set FFXIV apart from the pack?

Tanaka: That would be the battle system, which is probably also the greatest difference from FFXI as well. The Armoury System, which I explained before, will certainly set us apart, but players can also mix abilities they learn across different classes and re-create memorable jobs from the Final Fantasy series in their own way. This is why we separated classes into Disciplines instead of giving them traditional Final Fantasy job names.

-- So, you're really putting more power in the users' hands. By the way, you have consistently developed and worked on FFXI for almost 10 years now. What exactly is the draw for you?

Tanaka: (without pausing) It's about bringing people together. With the traditional RPG, the creator puts together a story with gameplay and cutscenes, and the user consumes it. With an MMORPG, the story is never finished. Friendships are born and tales are constantly woven between players... it's an RPG full of meetings and partings and many of our more passionate players carry over that experience into the real world. I find it fascinating to see how the world grows and expands outside the scope of the pre-built scenarios -- I might even call it an addiction.

-- So, in essence, a game is about giving the players a place to have fun, would you say?

Tanaka: Yes. This is why there are many virtual worlds that don't succeed -- they forget how to make it a game. Even if you are bringing people together, if there are no goals to accomplish, then there's not much propelling the development of the world.

Square Enix has announced that the PC Collector’s Edition version of MMO Final Fantasy XIV will be released in Europe on September 22nd. The standard SKU will hit retail on September 30th.
The PS3 version of the game will not be released until March 2011, with pricing to be announced at a later date.

It has been brought to our attention via forum member sirdayne that the official benchmark program for Final Fantasy XIV is now available for download!

The scenes that play out, take place on a ship on its way to Limsa Lominsa. The benchmark application allows you to choose the character that appears. All races are available to be selected in the benchmark including the Hyur Highlander and Female Miqo’te. The test can be run at a low resolution of 1280×720 and a high resolution of 1920×1080.

New Version Update Announcement! (14/05/2010)

Reflections on the First and Second Alpha Tests
Let me begin by expressing my thanks to all of you for participating in the first two tests in the alpha phase. I will be the first to admit that things have not gone as smoothly as we had originally hoped, and I offer my sincerest apologies to everyone who has had difficulties logging in to the game. We understand your frustration, but ask you to remain patient while we assess the problems and work to alleviate them.

For those testers who have been able to access the game, we greatly appreciate all the excellent feedback you have continued to provide. Your opinions are uniquely valuable to us as they provide an insight into the player’s perspective on the countless elements which make up FINAL FANTASY XIV. In response, our development team has been working around the clock, reviewing bug reports and browsing the tester forums, and will continue to make every effort to incorporate your opinions into the game’s development process.

Of course, due to the server and client issues, we are aware that many of you feel you have not had enough time to fully test the features indicated in the Test Content threads, such as basic controls and the battle system. For this reason, we have decided to extend the testing period for these areas of gameplay. In conjunction with this extension, we will be postponing plans to reset characters and conduct level balancing until players have had further opportunities to fully experience the battle and control systems.

The following is a summary of issues encountered during the first and second alpha tests:

- First Alpha Test
Due to unforeseen technical difficulties, the gathering of large numbers of characters in a single area caused a client-side error for many testers. This, in turn, resulted in server load exceeding estimated levels, ultimately limiting the overall number of testers being able to log in.

- Second Alpha Test
For the most part, we were able to resolve the client-side error players experienced on the first day of testing. However, solving that problem resulted in the emergence of new issues, which directly affected the testing efforts of many.
In addition, our efforts to alleviate server load issues proved insufficient, preventing us from increasing the maximum number of players able to log in simultaneously. This, unfortunately, meant that a large proportion of testers were unable to participate in the test.

In addition to the login issues, we also realize there still remain several other critical problems preventing many of our testers from testing the client software, even if they are able to log in. We are working on solving these issues one by one, and hope that with each new test, the software will become increasingly stable, and ultimately allow all of our testers to participate in the debugging process. The changes may not come overnight, but rest assured, they will come.

Again, I apologize for any inconvenience and frustration caused, and humbly ask for your continued support and feedback.

Final Fantasy XIV Alpha Test Begins

First impressions

The alpha test for FFXIV began on April 8th. (They then go into explaining what a beta test is. If you want me to translate it, let me know –Manly) We have our first impressions of that test here, but keep in mind that these are the impressions of a game under development, and that a lot of this is likely to change in the final version.

Opening

First, you make your character. The five races were present: Hyur, Miqo’te, Lalafell, Elezen, and Roegadyn. All races except Miqo’te were selectable.

You can select things like your facial pattern, height, and voice. Your starting equipment is decided by the class you choose. You can select what city you start in, but in the alpha test, you can only choose Limsa Lominsa, so we did. You also select your birthday and guardian deity.

After creating a character, you are presented with an opening movie and are taught how to battle through a tutorial. In battle, when you target an enemy and unsheathe your weapon, you are presented with the action list. You select the move you want to use from the list, and when your gauge fills the move is activated. Timing affects the power and accuracy of the move.

There’s also “battle regimens,” in which you select a number of moves to be used in succession. The order in which the moves are used can change the effect of the attack, so trying out different battle regimens to find the most effective ones looks like a lot of fun.

After the battle, the cut scene continues and you arrive in Limsa Lominsa shortly after. There are a lot of quests and cut scenes related to the story, so you really get sucked into it.

Guildleves

FFXIV’s quests are called “levequests.” You can receive rewards by killing a certain number of creatures or gathering a certain number of items. I tried out one of the battle-based levequests, first. You get a levequest from the counter and head to the Aetherite mentioned in the leve. Aside from being the starting points for levequests, Aetherite also restores HP and MP and serves as a return point for when you die.

There are five levels of difficulty for guildleves. I went solo this time so I selected a lower difficulty because it appears that the strength of the monsters changes with the difficulty level, but I’m sure getting a party together and going after stronger monsters will be fun. After defeating the monsters, I got my reward and returned to the Aetherite I started from by using the “Aetherite node” that appeared after I finished the quest. I was thankful for that little addition.

Rich character development

In FFXIV, you get a “physical bonus” after raising enough experience points. You put this bonus into your different stats to develop your character. Besides the usual strength, vitality, dexterity, agility, intelligence, wisdom (mind), charisma, and luck, you can also put them into HP and MP. You can also use your physical bonus to strengthen your elemental properties.

There are also training points. By accumulating these points, your skill rank goes up and you can learn new moves. Sometimes I learned a new move while playing and didn’t even realize it. You gain training points by doing things related to those jobs, like battle for disciplines of war and crafting for disciplines of hand. These new moves can be used by placing them on your action list. With all the customization with training points and physical bonus, I really felt that creating your own character is a deep and rich experience with many possibilities.

A rich MMORPG even casual gamers can enjoy

I wanted to bring you this information as quickly as I could, so this was just a brief introduction, but how did you like it? Even though this is still just the alpha test, the PCs and NPCs gestures and movements are so lovingly crafted, Eorzea really feels alive. This is a title that not only MMORPG veterans, but people who have never touched an MMORPG can enjoy. It’s still possible to sign up for beta testing from the main site, and they will continue to add new testers, so go sign up if you’re interested!

Dengeki magazine was lucky enough to get a shot at the alpha build for Final Fantasy XIV. They printed most of the information we saw yesterday in Famitsu, but also got some time to sit down with Producer Hiromichi Tanaka and Director Nobuaki Komoto! Together, they discussed details of the alpha and plans for the progression of beta testing.

- When Final Fantasy XI first started, it began with a beta test. Why did you decide to go back even further this time and start with an alpha?

Komoto: At the beta stage, a game is relatively complete. In order to better take in user opinions and make more adjustments, we wanted users to see an earlier version and let their feedback affect the direction of the game itself.

- So, does that mean there could be some dramatic changes after the alpha version?

Komoto: Yes, there could. We're already wondering ourselves what shape the game will take after the alpha testing is complete. There are issues we have seen arise, and we want to think of how to best fix these and add in user suggestions at the same time.

Tanaka: For the alpha test, we only have one World. The idea is we first test that World for stability and then in phase 1 of the beta test, we begin to add more Worlds and collect as much data as we can.

- Will the amount of playable cities increase in the beta phase?

Tanaka: More than simply increasing the play area, we want to test and adjust the core mechanics of the game. For example, we want to see if leveling up works properly or if attaining a new skill rank works properly. Our number one priority is to monitor these things closely.

Komoto: Just like how we set a limit to the levels, we want to place benchmarks and see if they can be reached without major issues. We expand the system a bit, and then sample data from within those constraints.

Tanaka: We want to examine the speed at which people grow, as well as the core game mechanics, and see if we need to make any adjustments.

- So, then it sounds like we won't really get the full game until the official release version.

Komoto: We think the full scope of the game will come together sometime during the beta phase.

Tanaka: The game system will be completed during the beta phase, but I would say you probably won't see the entirety of what the game world has to offer until the official release.

- I got to try out the Guildleve system, and it feels like a great way to manage your play time. You can complete a quest within 30 minutes and then start a new one right away. It feels like Assault in FFXI, where you can enjoy some casual challenges divided into easy to manage chunks. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it feels like a system really designed around light, casual play.

Komoto: That's true, but I wouldn't say it's just a system for light play. What we wanted to do is design something that casual players could enjoy. That entails making it simple and easy at first. However, while the rules are simple early on, future quests add more rules and more variations to Guildleve while at the same time putting players up against tougher monsters. That's the kind of system we're considering.

- As for character growth, it appears there are Skill Ranks for each Class and Physical Levels for the avatar itself. Physical Levels are where you can freely spend points on different parameters, right?

Komoto: In the alpha, there is a cap on Physical Levels, and you can't redistribute points already spent on parameters just yet. Later on, we want to allow players to reallocate points in case they focus too heavily on a certain attribute and want to adjust that. We also plan to make it so you cannot simply max out every attribute, so players will have to work to find a good balance. For example, you may raise a certain skill in order to play a Warrior-type class. If you later want to go as a Disciple of Magic, you can then reallocate those points into something more beneficial for a magic-user.

- Regarding character customization, will there be any limitations on attaching skills from one Class onto another?

Komoto: If we can, we want to allow players to use skills from other Classes on their current one. However, there are many things to test out regarding this, such as how the effects of skills will be weakened when used with other Classes. For example, maybe a certain combination of skills doesn't work well together, or perhaps another combination is too powerful -- we want to maintain game balance as we go forward. There will, of course, also be some skills that we simply won't allow to be attached to other Classes. At this stage, we are still looking to see how things work, so feel free to try out any combinations you wish.

- With FFXI and Support Jobs, there was a limitation, and in general you wanted users to play Jobs a certain way, which made it easy for other players to pick up on what that Job's role was. If you can freely set abilities on different Classes and freely boost your parameters, will that make it difficult for players to define roles for Classes?

Komoto: That's why we feel it is most important to have Classes defined by their main skills. Although there is wiggle room for adding other abilities, a Class that excels at tanking will usually be considered a tank first and foremost. From that starting point, you can begin to fine-tune your role based on the situation and see how your Class works with other Classes.

- How are crafting skills coming along at this point in the alpha?

Komoto: We've touched on them so far and let players get the basics of cultivating materials, but we're still seeing how the system will take shape. We plan to have players able to gather materials in field areas and are preparing Guildleves that involve cultivation and harvesting. However, we're still in the testing phase for these aspects of crafting. Also, we're going to make skills for harvesting and crafting and want to make the whole experience fun for players. Fighting battles is fun, but we hope to create a game where players can have just as much as crafters -- raising skills, going on adventures, and even completing storylines. Guildleves should be very useful for making this happen.

- How many different types of Guildleves are there in the alpha version?

Komoto: Not so many. A little less than 20.

- Will players be able to solo even some high-level Guildleves?

Komoto: We hope to allow that by use of the selectable difficulty levels. That isn't to say there won't be any party-related Guildleves, but we want to allow solo players to enjoy Guildleve as much as possible.

- Speaking of which, is 6 members the average party size?

Komoto: This time, we've set the maximum for parties at 15 members -- almost the size of an alliance. However, they aren't divided into units. A party of 3 is fine, a party of 8 is fine, and we don't want to impose any standards from our end. Instead of forcing minimum party sizes on players, we want to allow them to freedom to put together any group they wish.

- I was surprised to see that Teleport and Warp were available to every Class right from the start!

Komoto: There will be costs attached to those abilities, but that hasn't been implemented yet in the alpha. We hope to make it so players with limited time can travel quickly, but also add elements that players with time to spare can enjoy if they decide to travel back on foot. We are looking to provide enough warp points to make these abilities a real help for players short on time. As for costs involved, we don't plan anything really restricting, and hope to keep it down to almost nothing.

- The range of motion for avatars was astounding. Lalafell are especially cute.

Komoto: They're sickeningly cute, aren't they? (laughs) This time around, the amount of motions and equipment and everything has been expanded extensively. Then there's the facial improvements.

- The facial expressions are amazing. Characters in cut scenes are so expressive and have voices, too. Compared with current MMOs, especially FFXI, the world of FFXIV just draws you in completely.

Komoto: I had that same feeling when viewing the cut scenes myself.

- The alpha only supports Windows, but will the beta phase add support for PS3?

Tanaka: We may not make it in time for phase 1 of the beta, but around phase 2 of the beta we believe we will be able to support PS3.

- How long do you plan to run the alpha and stage 1 and 2 of the beta? Are you just seeing how things go and playing it by ear?

Tanaka: Things may change as the product we are making changes through testing. The alpha and phase 1 of the beta will be pretty similar. Phase 2 of the beta is where the game will begin to change based on the feedback collected from the alpha.

- Will phase 1 of the beta add more Worlds than the alpha? Will any of the feedback from the alpha influence the initial beta stage?

Tanaka: Between the alpha and phase 1 of the beta, we don't expect much to change at all. Phase 2 of the beta and onward will see the game get updated and become vastly different.

Komoto: More than a set length for each phase, I would say it's how many stages we need.
